Dumfries & Galloway Regional Tourism Strategy

Dumfries & Galloway Regional Tourism Strategy 2011-2016
Tourism is a key sector in the regional economy of Dumfries and Galloway and is an industry that the Council and its key partners will continue to support in its growth and diversification.
The most recent Scottish Tourism Economic Activity Monitor report has concluded that in 2009, approximately 5,977 jobs (full time equivalents) were supported by direct tourist expenditure in the region, and a further 1,358 jobs were supported by indirect revenue from tourism. It is estimated tourism accounted for 11% of employment in Dumfries & Galloway – placing tourism in the top three of employment sectors. The total contribution of tourism to the Dumfries & Galloway economy in 2009 was £269.68 million.
The national 'ambition' is to grow the value of Scottish tourism by 50% between 2006 and 2015 - this is equal to a consistent annual growth rate of 4%. This challenge is set against a global forecast by the World Trade Organisation of 4-5% growth until the year 2020.
While the value of tourism to the region in 2006 was £226 million, in 2009 it had risen to £269 million, an increase of 19%. The ambition is to achieve an annual worth of £340 million into the local economy by 2015.
Key to the success of this ambitious target is the partnership working between the main organisations in the region responsible for supporting and representing the tourism industry:
- Dumfries and Galloway Council
- Destination Dumfries & Galloway
- VisitScotland
In challenging economic times this can only be achieved with the support of all those involved in the tourism industry within Dumfries and Galloway and further afield in Scotland, the United Kingdom and overseas.
The development of the new Regional Tourism Strategy has brought all of the key partners together to develop a strategy that supports and will greatly assist all concerned with the Tourism Industry in Dumfries and Galloway to deliver our joint aims.
The region has outstanding natural landscape qualities and through supporting product development and delivering customer expectation working together we can achieve...
Our Vision:
To establish Dumfries and Galloway as a world-class destination in which our visitors receive a superb quality of service, where our products and services exceed vistors' expectations. This will maximise the long-term economic and social benefits which sustainable tourism can bring to the region.
