The Dumfries and Galloway Wildlife Festival

DDG WildlifeFest WebAttract more visitors in March and April

DD&G recently announced that it is the new management of the Dumfries & Galloway Wildlife Festival.

Working with Scottish Natural Heritage and Dumfries & Galloway Council, DD&G will be supporting the Festival to develop its full potential as an attraction for visitors, as well as continuing to encourage locals to interact with and enjoy their region's wildlife.

For the 2012 festival, we are looking to talk to tourism businesses who are currently either involved with the Wildlife Festival, or who are proactive in utilising Dumfries & Galloway's wildlife product and this festival as a hook to attract visitors. We are also keen to hear from tourism businesses interested in creating wildlife themed packages.

More about the festival...

Scottish Natural Heritage and Dumfries & Galloway Council have pledged to continue funding of the Dumfries and Galloway Wildlife Festival. In order to ensure a smooth transition to DD&G, Clair McFarlan (Clair McFarlan Environmental Consultancy) and Peter Norman (Biodiversity Officer, Dumfries & Galloway Council) will again form the core team organising the Festival.

Inga McVicar (McVicar Walden), who provides Project management services for DD&G, will provide the link into DD&G’s voluntary Board and other DD&G projects, as well as assisting to coordinate partner websites, delivering social networking expertise and building engagement between the Festival and the region’s tourism businesses.

Wilma Finlay, Chair of DD&G and Managing Director of the Cream o’ Galloway said:

“The Board of DD&G is delighted to be working with Scottish Natural Heritage and Dumfries & Galloway Council to ensure this wonderful festival can continue. The Dumfries and Galloway Wildlife Festival celebrates and invites us all to take part in our region’s uniquely diverse wildlife. With visitors already coming to the region to take part in the festival, we look forward to working with our partners to attract more visitors to the region and to secure the festival’s future as a cornerstone event for locals and tourists alike.”

Peter Norman, Biodiversity Officer Dumfries & Galloway Council added:

“The Wildlife Festival has steadily grown over the last eight years and now gives many local people and an increasing number of visitors an opportunity to get close to our fantastic wildlife. With the support of DD&G, the festival will continue to grow, with more events, more wildlife and a wider appreciation of the year-round wildlife attractions that the region has to offer.”

Chris Miles, Area Manager, Scottish Natural Heritage added:

“We are very pleased that DD&G have taken on the management this year. Getting the tourism businesses to run this shows how much their visitors value the wildlife experience they get when they come to this area. I hope their involvement will inject new enthusiasm to develop the festival further. It will become a key feature within the Wild Seasons initiative.”

The Dumfries and Galloway Wildlife Festival 2012 takes place from the 30th of March to the 15th of April. Events take place throughout the region, ranging from family activities to evening wildlife watching. The full programme will be announced January 2012.
